To Lie or Not to Lie?

Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. -Colossians 3:9, The Message

Lying isn't THAT big of a deal, right? Your friend asks you if she can copy your answers for homework, your mom thinks you're at youth group but you're really over at a friend's house, you tell a cute older boy you're 17 when you're really 14...

The bible is super clear about lying - a Christian should not do it. In the scripture above, Paul is talking to the Colossians (people who lived in a city called Colossae). Lying is part of your life BEFORE you knew Christ. Once you started a relationship with Him you took off bad habits like lying and got rid of them.

Why not lie? When we lie we lose trust, and trust is VERY difficult to earn back. More importantly we see from scripture that we please God when we speak the truth.

The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in those who tell the truth. -Proverbs 12:22

We all make mistakes. We cave under pressure because we don't want to get in trouble. This is where we have to be quick to ask Jesus for HELP! He will give you strenth to tell the truth when it is not easy and strength to apologize when you've lied.

God, may I speak only truth so that I can bring you delight! Help me to stop myself when I want to lie and remember that lying is no longer part of who I am, since I am a new creation in Christ.

True Beauty

Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. -Proverbs 31:30

I think of my grandmother: her 94 year old body bent with age, face covered in wrinkles, hair thinning and white. She was the picture of true beauty - a woman who feared the Lord. She was greatly praised by her children and grandchildren.

In a society that makes everything about appearance it is hard for me not to get wrapped up in keeping up, but the way I (or anyone) looks on the outside does not indicate what is on the inside. The most beautiful face and body can be a shell to rottenness.

Lord, we praise You because we are fearfully and wonderfully made. We love You for who You are and the great things You have done. Help us to put our appearance into perspective, knowing that people look at the outward appearance but You look at the heart. Help us to read Your word so we can learn more about You and be confident in who we are in You.

Check out this video that I was reminded of today:

Do you think girls put too much emphasis on the way they look?

Where my girls at?!

This is a blog for the sweet teenage girls at Lakeview :) Woohoo! Hopefully there will be a new one every day or every other day. Thanks for dropping by!

Set a guard over my mouth, O Lord. Keep watch over the door of my lips. -Psalm 141:3

There is a scripture in Proverbs that says the power of life and death are in the tongue. Here, when we read tongue or mouth or lips in the scripture, the Bible is really talking about the words we speak.

Sometimes I say things I shouldn't say. Rude things, critical things, depressing things. I have the ability to speak death or life - and so do you. Choose to speak LIFE today! Guard your mouth from speaking negative words and focus on speaking things that encourage people, things that would be pleasing to God.

Lord, help us to watch the words we say. May we please you in our words and actions, so that we will be a light shining for you.

What do you think? Do you think it is difficult to guard your lips?
